Playing Guitar w/ Long Nails- The Problem: Flat-Fingered Playing

Open D tuning lets you play guitar and keep your nails, because you can play basic chords “flat-fingered”. Flat-fingered playing doesn’t work in standard tuning. Chord shapes are different and you can’t press them down without your nails getting in your way. Your fingers lean into neighboring strings, deadening them, and your chords sound terrible.

You need an alternative approach that lets you play flat-fingered and sound good. Open D tuning gives you that. This video demonstrates why long nails don’t work in standard tuning, and why you need to change up the conventional way of learning guitar. Check out the other videos in the playlist to learn how Open D tuning lets you play guitar and keep your nails!

I’ve been playing guitar for over a year now and only started growing my nails 3-4 months ago and now that they’re long they get in the way and I need to cut them.

The thing is, my nail is longer than my flesh, NATURALLY. That’s why I’m losing hope and no matter what, even if I cut it as short as I can, I might still not be able to master guitar, helpp๐Ÿ˜ญ

Does this rule count for Ukeleles as well?
I really want to start learning the ukelele with my long nails ๐Ÿ˜œ

I’ve been playing with flat fingers for almost a year when I first started playing. It worked out when I only play chords and power chords but when I wanted to play some riffs and harder stuff I had to trim them.
I honestly don’t remember the last time my nails where lond… but I do tend to keep the nails on my right hand a little bit longer

My problem is that, the flesh underneath my nails are longer than the tip of my fingers, so even if i trim, they’re still kinda get in the way when trying to press the strings, and if I trim them shorter, I’ll cut my flesh and it will hurt like hell. Really sucks, but I’ll keep trying. ๐Ÿ˜–

I just started with the guitar and I had the strange feeling that this is why there almost comes no sound.. or bad sound. Iโ€™m gonna keep practicing and see… otherwise bye nails. Makes me sad ๐Ÿ˜ž
